On Friday April 13th BBC 4 continues its fantastic run of musical
programming with a night dedicated
to all things Southern Rock. This kicks off at 9pm with
Sweet Home Alabama: The Southern Rock Saga
- an hour long documentary charting the rise of the genre - and
is followed up with a selection of studio performances from all
the big names in Southern Rock at the BBC. Rounding the night off
is a classic live performance from the genre's chief exponents
Lynyrd Skynyrd, from Shepherd's Bush in 1975.
Not to be missed!
For many people their first experience of Southern Rock was
through Eric Clapton - with Duane
Allman from the Allman Brothers
providing the slide guitar on the classic Layla, he
brought the genre into the mainstream. The album Layla and
Other Assorted Love Songs was wall-to-wall Southern Rock and
chock-full of the Blues. For others their first exposure to the
music of the South was from watching BBC TV's Top Gear,
who used The Allman Brothers Band's
Jessica as its theme tune.
To get you in the mood we thought we'd present you with a
selection of the genre's finest recordings - essential listening
whether you're a Southern Rock expert or simply dipping your toe
in for the first time. Click on the at the top to have a
